On September 25th from 11a.m. to 1p.m. Student Activities Council (SAC) hosted their first library quad picnic.sac picnic

Picnic blankets were provided, along with free sandwiches, snow cones, cookies and chips. In addition to the food, a couple of games and activities were available for use: Jenga blocks, hula hoops and speakers hooked up to playlists.

Sarah Kelly, Club President, explained how SAC’s goal with planning events is to keep people on campus since many students merely attend their courses and leave. As a result, they miss out on meeting new people and lose their sense of community.

“We try to host at least one event a month,” said Kelly. “Today’s turnout was great, everyone talking and dancing.”

Seán Hogland, an active participant, barely knew anyone at the event but made several friends once she started playing Jenga.

“I only had one friend there, but I just kind of joined in,” said Hogland. “At first we were actually trying to balance everything, but then we started just goofing around.”

According to Hogland, Jenga was played by firefighters to practice using the Jaws Of Life (a hydraulic cutter tool) to remove crash victims from their vehicles without tipping anything over.

Another participant, Emily Medler, marveled at the event itself beyond the games.

“It was all so fascinating,” said Medler, “a real blast.”

The picnic is one of many events. According to Kelly, next week on October 5th SAC is hosting their first Tailgate (a pep rally for all the sports teams) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the library quad.sac picnic sac picnic
