Montage editors awarded national SPJ award

Spencer Gleason and Kurt Oberreither place first at national competition, sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Spencer Gleason, sports editor, and Kurt Oberreither, news editor, of The Montage, St. Louis Community College – Meramec’s student newspaper, have been named national winners of a Mark of Excellence Award by the Society of Professional Journalists. Gleason and Oberreither placed first nationally in the two-year college category for sports writing for the Nov. 17, 2011 article, “An Athletic Dilemma: Cost vs. Accountability.”

Gleason and Oberreither will be honored at the SPJ Convention and National Journalism Conference Sept. 20-22 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism.

The Montage advanced as Region 7 finalists by placing 1st in the Best All-Around Newspaper category in the two-year category and 1st for General News Reporting in the two year category. Each year, The Montage competes nationally against several other two-year and four-year school newspapers from across the country. More recently, The Montage was named the 2011 Best Overall 2-Year College Newspaper by the Missouri College Media Association and awarded a 2009 National Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press, the highest collegiate honor for student media outlets.
