STLCC-Meramec students and staff were barred from the premises this morning following a campus-wide power outage.

The power loss led Meramec to cancel all of its classes before 10 a.m.

Today is also the first day to register for fall classes. Student Administration/Registration Assistant Klaudia Krygel and registration helps students register both in person and online. She said when she arrived before 7 a.m. to prepare for the influx of students, security wouldn’t let her past the parking lot. When she made it to Clark Hall, the website and the phones were still down. However, she said some students were able to register early online.

Camille Porter, a student applying for her first semester at Meramec, came to school this morning to register for nursing classes in pursuit of another nursing degree. Porter said she called registration to find out why campus was closed but her calls never went through.

“I did try to call this morning and I thought something was wrong with my phone,” Porter said.

For students like Patrick Driscoll, the power outage meant class was cancelled.

“I thought it was awesome because I got to go back to bed and take a shower,” Driscoll said.

Manager of Admissions and Records Michael Cundiff, Ph.D., students, staff and faculty were allowed into the buildings between 9:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. He said, overall, students were satisfied with the registration process despite technical difficulties.

“I think most of the students, if not all of the students, left happy,” Cundiff said. “I give credit to the staff. They dealt with it, rolled with it, and despite technical problems we were able to be responsive to the students needs.”
