On Aug. 31, 2011, tents lined the STLCC-Meramec Student Center quad while students gathered
to meet administration and make a commitment to college.

Meramec’s second annual Meet the Administration and Signing Day were sponsored by Phi
Theta Kappa (PTK) and the Student Governance Council (SGC). PTK organized signing while
SGC handled the administration side.

“This [event] has been a long time goal with PTK,” said Charles Lambert, PTK vice president of
communications. “The entire goal is to show people there are opportunities.”

Students had the opportunity to sign a 30 foot long banner as a commitment to completing their
higher education goal for a slice of pizza or ice cream while administrators were there from 11
a.m. to 2 p.m. to greet and speak with students.

Some leadership in attendance were Meramec President George Wasson, Dean of Science and
Technology Andrew Langrehr, and Linden Crawford, vice president of student affairs.

“It’s not really easy to just walk up to someone and be like, ‘Hey, how are you doing?,” SGC
President Mark Wilson said. “We encourage students to talk to them.”

Lambert said Signing Day was created in response to a call from President Obama to have
students commit to earning their degrees. According to Lambert, the signature banner had 250
signatures last year, but he said they hope they have more this year.
