Archery class brings back ancient sport

Teddy Ferris, Ph.d, Archery instructor, said he has respect for this sport he has begun to taught recently. The Archery class fill one credit requirement of PE. The appreciation Ferris is hard to ignore.
“The bow and arrow are one the greatest inventions of humankind,” Ferris said with a smile, in the first day his students were going to put to practice what they have learned throughout the semester.
On this sunny and windy Monday morning, students of the Archery class shot the arrows for the first time. They were all at different skill levels, which is what Ferris said makes this class special.
“We have people from all skill levels, both male and female, from all different backgrounds,” Ferris said. “Anyone can participate.”
This is Ferris’ first semester teaching the class. Ferris grew up in St. Clair, where he said he got some experience. Later in Mizzou he also participated in this sport which he said he enjoys for the skill it takes, but also its simplicity.
“It’s just you and the bow,” Ferris said.
Jacob Hight (left picture), student, said he finds some spirituality in the sport.
“This is something romantic in my mind,” Hight said. “This sport is more meditative.”
The Archery class will also be offered through the fall semester.
